Thengal Manor

The best place to stay in Jorhat is the five bedroom Thengal Manor, the 75-year-old family home of one of Assam's leading planter's families.

The architecture with its colonnaded verandah, covered chandeliered sit-out overlooking the lush lawns, fireplace and Louis XV furniture in the drawing room is an immediate throwback to a colonial time and an opulent plantation past. High ceilings, walls full of family photos, stately furniture with touches of gilt, carpets and above all, the stunning collection of art add atmosphere.

About Thengal Manor

A short distance out of the often chaotic heart of Jorhat, the road becomes quieter. Old trees shade the road as you turn off into a smaller side street and through a pair of wrought iron gates.

The first look at the Thengal Manor is unforgettable. Lutyen style columns support the lofty portico. A short flight of steps leads to the front verandah with exquisite flooring of red cement with in-situ patterns. An ideal place to enjoy the front garden is around the large round table with easy chairs around it. A newly created swimming pool right opposite the porch somewhat mars the period feel, although it would be great in the summers.

The Manor is the family home of a tea-baron, acknowledged as Assam's richest tea grower. And despite being open to select guests, it still serves as the residence of the octogenarian owner. The entire manor is a feast for the eyes; from high ceilings, walls full of family photos, to stately furniture with touches of gilt, carpets and above all, the stunning collection of art. The formal dining room has a golden light cast by chandeliers and wall scones. Dinner is served here on excellent china and gleaming silverware.

The rooms are vast and filled with stuffed sofas and armchairs, carpets and impressive beds. We spent happy hours admiring the various paintings drawings and photographs.

The gardens of the Thengal Manor are large and meandering. An unusual thing here are the family memorial slabs at the back, including one of the owner, who, God Bless him with many more active years, is still alive! It seems that he has already chosen what he wants to be his memorial slab!

With its impressive history and well cared for interiors, the Thengal Manor is one of the best stately homes we have come across in India.
